Are you interested in writing? Photography? Graphics? Journalism? Reviewing books, music, theater or film? Keylining, layout and design? Women's issues?
What She Wants wants you.
We need your ideas, talents and energy to help make What She Wants a paper that will truly serve all Cleveland women.
We're blessed with a wealth of diverse and multitalented women in this area. We need to respond to a rich variety of needs, interests and desires.
What we, as women in the Cleveland area, have in common is the need for a place where we can put our talents to work and share them with others; a place to fill our many needs and fulfill our desires; a place where we, as feminist women, can learn and grow. At What She Wants, we're working to create a

paper that offers women the freedom to express ourselves and help one another.
You don't have to be an "expert" to work with What She Wants. As women, we haven't been socialized to go out and try new things. We often have the feeling that we have to be "twice as good" at something before we even can get started. Part of what we want to do at What She Wants is to offer women a supportive atmosphere where they can learn to do new things, increase their skills and develop their talents.
Bring your ideas and energy to us, and we'll do everything we can to help turn those ideas into realities.

We are pleased to report that the What She Wants Benefit Concert, held March 27 at the Women's Open House, was a great success. Nearly 150 women attended what was our first benefit in several years. We'd like to think they all came as avid WSW devotees, but certainly the talented and diverse cast of performers was a prime attraction.
་
Many thanks go to the countless women who helped make the evening so successful: performers Cindy McKay, Jan Held, Deb "D.J." Adler, Gusti and Debbie Gitlin, Rosalind and the A Cups, Abby Linhart and Norma Troy, Peggy Cella, Michelle Vanderlip and Lisa Rainsong, and The Last Set Band who generously donated their time and talents; the women of the Coffeehouse Collective for providing the space and expertise; the sound crew who did a consistently good job throughout the many set-ups; Lisa Rainsong and Mudslide for lending us their sound equipment; the many women who helped with set-up and clean-up and selling tickets and refreshments; and our own Michelle Vanderlip, Peggy Cella, and Cheryl Reed who, with special assistance from Deborah Hirshberg, spent numerous hours in preparation.
The tally of the proceeds is not yet complete, but we estimate we took in approximately $700.00. Of this total, about $150.00 goes to pay expenses, $250.00 to the What She Wants Collective to meet operating expenses, and the remaining $300.00 to the fund for the What She Wants Media Center. It's a small start but an encouraging one, and we thank all of you who came out in support.
Plans are underway for future benefits as we continue to build our Media Center Fund. Some, like this first event, will be for women only. Others will be open to men. Among the feedback we've received so far have been some strong objections to excluding men from our benefits. Women are our source of support, but we receive contributions from men in the form of subscriptions and advertising. As has been our policy since What She Wants' inception, we reserve our space for manuscripts from women. We are a newspaper by and for women, and we are strongly committed to continuing this policy. The controversy over a women-only benefit, however, was echoed in our group itself. Issues raised included advertising publicly for an event that is not a public event, alienating women who prefer to attend social events with their spouses or male friends while trying to reach out to these same women through our newspaper, and respecting women's need for a women-only space. This debate undoubtedly goes on within many women's groups and, for ourselves, is far from resolved.
What She Wants reserves the right to edit all materials submitted for publication. Where time permits, we will discuss all edits with the author before going to press. If you wish to see a copy of your edited article, submit your manuscript no later than the first of the month and include a self-addressed, stamped envelope with your submission.
